Over the weekend, our technical team at OneByte got the opportunity to participate in an SDG Hackathon. The hackathon in question took place at National Incubation Center Islamabad which was co-organized by Code for Pakistan and hosted by Ignite – National Technology fund.
The overall theme of this Hackathon was to develop innovative solutions to address Sustainable Development Goals e.g. no poverty, zero hunger, good health and well-being, quality education, decent work and economic growth, industry innovation and infrastructure, sustainable cities and communities, and responsible consumption and production.
This SDG Hackathon brought together diverse teams to reboot local services by creating open source web, mobile, and SMS applications. A total of 17 startups consisting of over 150 participants attended the hackathon.
OneByte’s team selected Ibaad as their product. Ibaad is a charity crowd fundraising initiative which provides the easiest way to raise money online for verified charitable cases in order to help the underprivileged. The objective of this platform is devoted to positive change and improving livelihoods of the disadvantaged in Pakistan.
The idea was initiated by Ibaad.org whereas OneByte provided all the necessary technical and hosting support. Ibaad.org (beta) went live at the end of the Hackathon and offers features such as:
- The listing of varying charity cases with complete description and media,
- Website visitors can see the total amount that is needed to fully fund a project and the amount of funding that has already been raised, and
- Also enables users to make their own donations to the cause listed.
We also integrated Sim Sim payment gateway in the website. Sim-sim is a mobile wallet that let the users make the payment right from their smart phones. The benefit of having sim-sim is to allow people to easily make donations, as credit card penetration is very limited in Pakistan as well as both Paypal and Stripe are blocked. So, through sim-sim, users can make donations based on their capacity and can range from Rs 1 to Rs 100,000/-. Users can also request to add their cause on the website by contacting with the management. We plan to keep it as transparent as possible hence no direct project listing is allowed at this moment in time.
Our team at OneByte believes that a great idea isn’t defined by the prizes it wins. But the impact it has on others. But we were extremely surprised and happy to hear our team name called out as the 4th place winners. This was a real confidence booster for the whole team and motivates us further to help change the environment around us.
To sum it all up, we had a really inspiring day, hopefully, we’ll continue to develop ideas to bring positive change.
Moving forward, we plan to continue working on this platform and improve it further to ensure that we are meeting the needs of the underprivileged part of the society. We will also be adding credit card payment and Paypal integration to facilitate people abroad so that they can easily make donations to their preferred cause.
So, contribute today as your contribution will make the most difference to people that really need it. By providing even a small donation, you can be a part of something big. Let’s aim to revolutionalize Pakistan together.
